GOLD COAST (NBL) - Just five months after breaking his pelvis in a horrific car crash with a semi trailer, Australian junior star Jason Cadee has made his professional debut, scoring 11 points in 16 minutes as his Gold Coast Blaze defeated the Townsville Crocs 93-81 in Round 10 of the NBL.
Cadee, who helped Australia finish fourth at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship and also played for the World Select Team at the Nike World Hoop Summit, was expected to miss the entire season but showed against Townsville that he will be an asset for the Blaze as they look to climb into the NBL playoffs.
Gold Coast coach Joey Wright was delighted to see Cadee on the court. ''To have been out as long as he has, and do what he did on Friday night, that is something pretty special. We hadn't factored him in to have that much of an impact, we know what a talent he is, but we didn't expect so much so soon.''
Cadee was simply lost for words. ''It's, I haven't got the word, it was that good," he said.
The mastermind of the Blaze's victory was another former FIBA junior representative, Chris Goulding, who scored 20 points in 4/8 shooting from the perimeter to continue his hot form.
Blaze imports Daryl Hudson (18 points) and Ira Clark (16 points, 11 rebounds) were also strong as the Blaze improved to 4-7. For Townsville (6-7), Will Blalock (21 points) and Peter Crawford (15 points) performed strongly.
A well established star was NBL player of the week, as Kirk Penney scored 22 points as the New Zealand Breakers beat the Hawks 89-85 in Wollongong to take top spot on the ladder, and then nailed 25 points on 6/10 three-point shooting the next night as the Breakers (10-2) beat Melbourne 90-80 to consolidate their position.
Against Wollongong (9-3), Penney received strong support from CJ Bruton and Gary Wilkinson (both 15 points), while Kevin Braswell (16 points, 5 rebounds) and Wilkinson (18 points) were excellent against Melbourne (2-9).
Olympian Shawn Redhage was outstanding yet again with 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Perth Wildcats (8-4) shook off last placed Sydney, 87-84 in Perth. Julian Khazzouh had a night out for Sydney with 23 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 blocks, but was exposed by the fast paced Wildcats at the defensive end.

Two nights earlier in Adelaide, 15 points and a massive last minute block from 36er Brad Hill denied Sydney (1-10) a much needed win, the home town 36ers (4-6) prevailing 81-77. The Kings were led by 18 points from Luke Martin and 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists from import Trey Gilder.
In the final game of the round, defence ruled the roost in Cairns (7-3) as the hometown Taipans held Townsville to just five final quarter points to record a hard fought 56-51 win.
Taipans centre Ian Crosswhite led the way with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while for the Crocs, Crawford top scored with 13.
